1.3 The Commercial Ban

Life is pretty free and easy on ice.cream.org, but there is one rule which is cardinal: the commercial ban. The basic rule is that no site may have as its primary or substantial purpose the acquisition of money. Sites are expected to be non-profit, as is ice.cream.org.

Also included in the commercial ban is any banner, popup or other advertising whether for profit or otherwise. Webrings and the like will be considered on a case-to-case basis, but we reserve the right to impose our tastes if the ring has dubious pecuniary flavourings.

Anyone caught spamming (sending unsolicited Email or newsgroup postings) through any Dairynet server will, of course, have his or her account removed immediately, and all his or her data will be deleted from the machine. But if you have an account with us, you'll hate spammers too :-)

The reasons for the commercial ban are severalfold. Firstly, ClaraNet are kind enough to provide the bandwidth upon which ICE sits. (This is a one off priviledge, so don't go bothering them to plug your server in!) It would be unethical if we or our users profited from ClaraNet's generosity. Secondly, there is enough whoring on the web as it is - we wish to remain a chaste haven amongst the bannered and pop-upped dross. Your profit is in your free ICE account. If you want to set up a commercial site, you need to purchase a commercial account.

There may be grey areas, of course - if your site includes some product or service for payment, but is not primarily commercial, we prefer that you get another domain name, which we will register for you without profit (and include it on our name-server). Even so, the site must not be primarily commercial, must offer some benefit to the Internet community and must not have any damn banners!

This is one of those issues where our capricious decision will be final. As we get bigger, we will probably establish some more formal method of adjudication and so forth.
